We collected data from health care evaluations on progression to moderate PBC (abnormal level of bilirubin or albumin) or advanced-stage PBC (abnormal level of both).
Compared with the group with PBC alone, the median hemoglobin and albumin values in the PBC-SLE group at the time of diagnosis of PBC were lower (both P < 0.05).
Methods Serum of 184 Belgian SSc patients with a known SSc-antibody profile, was analyzed for PBC-Ab (antimitochondrial antibodies [AMA], anti-Gp210, anti-Sp100 and anti-PML) using indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) analysis on human epithelioma-2000 (HEp-2000) cells (ANA-IIF, Immunoconcepts) and liver-kidney-stomach tissue sections (IIF-LKS) (Menarini), and a line immunoblot (LB) (EuroImmun).

After treatment, the group with PBC alone showed lower alanine aminotransferase and glutamyltransferase values and aspartate aminotransferase/platelet ratio indices at the final visit (all P < 0.05).
Multivariate analysis identified lower albumin, higher eosinophil count, and etiology of PBC as independent factors associated with severe pruritus (≥5 points of NRS).
This is the first study to demonstrate that POGLUT1 and not CD80 is the effector gene regulated by the primary functional SNP rs2293370, and that increased expression of POGLUT1 might be involved in the pathogenesis of PBC.
Because activated T cells target the intrahepatic bile ducts in PBC and pre-clinical models suggested that blocking CD80/CD86 with CTLA-4 Ig might have therapeutic benefit in PBC, we performed an open-label trial to determine if CTLA-4 Ig (abatacept) is safe and potentially efficacious in PBC patients with an incomplete response to UDCA.
